Cold, so cold. Katie kept pulling, putting her foot against the door frame for leverage. She finally gave up, blowing on her hands to warm them. Shivering, her teeth vibrating against each other, Katie went and sat on her bed. As she puzzled what to do, her eyes wandered to the chair in the corner of her room. The flame of the oil lamp danced on the vibrant colors of the shawl draped over the back of the chair. She was transfixed by the beauty of the shawl and the design she had not noticed before. There were definitely flecks of silver woven among the threads that shimmered in the light of the lamp.
"I don't think I have ever been so cold in my whole life," Katie whispered to no one in particular. "Now I'm talking to myself." Her sigh came out in a shiver. She had to try and focus on what to do. The cold was so bad she couldn't stand it. Suddenly she got up and walked over to the chair, grabbing the shawl and throwing it over her shoulders. It felt good as she wrapped it around herself, walking around the room several times trying to revive her circulation. "I'm going to try that door one more time," she said, to no one again.
Thinking the door was still stuck, Katie pulled as hard as she could. The door swung open so easily that katie flew backwards and landed on her bottom, the door slamming against the wall. "Oh, ouch!" She stood up rubbing her backside. "Eee gads. If her parents didn't come running after that racket, it was a miracle.
The shawl lay on the floor where it had landed when she fell. Katie glanced inside the closet. There, on the floor, was the letter that had been frozen to the inside of her sweater. There were splinters of ice all around. Katie hesitated for a second before picking it up, but seeing the ice was not on the letter she thought maybe it would be okay to touch. It was. The envelope had a seal on the back flap. It was an intricate design like a small round piece of lace. Actually, it was ice. She lifted the flap breaking the seal which melted away on the paper without a trace if moisture left behind. Katie pulled out the white sheet inside, standing by the oil lamp to read the contents: Mistress Katie Minerva You are herby cordially invited to attend the festivities in Crystal City. Proper attire is required. Please be ready to depart by Moon Shine.

About the Book
Katie Minerva is a little girl growing up in the mystical town of Sumneytown in the late 1800s. She is kind and loving, with a curious nature—and she is different from other girls her age. She has made a new friend named Asia, who is the niece of Willow Jewel Oldcastle. Mrs. Oldcastle is a weaver of rugs and blankets who lives on Thistle Twist Lane and is an old friend of Katie’s Granny Ruby.
Katie meets Mrs. Oldcastle and Asia for the first time while having afternoon tea with Granny Ruby at Dream Weaver Cottage. Even though they’ve only just met, the weaver gives Katie a gift wrapped in brown paper with a purple bow. It’s a beautiful shawl with silver threads woven in with the colorful fabric.
With this strange gift, Katie Minerva’s adventures truly begin, taking her a world far away from that of her normal, everyday life—for what the Dream Weaver has truly woven for her is magic.

L. K. Quinque is a wife, a mother of two grown daughters and one fat cat, and a grandmother of four. She goes home in her stories to the village of Sumneytown, where she grew up.
