My Mom has cancer. Cancer changes the way her body feels. It changes the way she looks. It doesn’t change who she is. It doesn’t change how much she loves me. And, it doesn’t change how much I love her
When my mom told us she had cancer, she tried not to cry. I cried so much it hurt. She told me she was going to fight the cancer with special medicine. That I have to stay positive and that the medicine might not make her feel good. She said that was alright, and that she needed me to be her helper.
Today my mom is going to the hospital to have an operation. She said it’s just a small operation, and that she would be getting a “port” put in. That’s where the doctor will give her the cancer fighting medicine, and the port will help to send the medicine where it needs to go. She said it would be just under her skin and we will even be able to see where it is! My brother thinks that is so cool.
My mom needs to stay strong, so the doctor told her to drink special “milkshakes” to help her do that. So, we went to the store and bought a bunch of different flavors. We went home and had our own taste test – that was fun! My mom’s favorite is Chocolate Milkshake. Mine is Cookies and Cream.

When someone has cancer, it can change a lot of things about that person. Cancer can change the way someone looks and feels; it can even change some of the things someone does. But there is one thing that cancer can never change: cancer can never change love.
Gaining insight from her own mother’s battle with cancer, author Dana Romanello-Flynn shows what day-to-day life can be like for the child of a parent with cancer. That struggle can be one of the most unsettling things a child can face, and in that situation it is important to focus on hope and life.
Cancer Changes Some Things, But Not Everything is told from the perspective of a daughter whose mother has cancer. Embedded within her story are little things that can be helpful and inspire hope in children as they support their parents on their own cancer journeys.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to support the research efforts of the Lustgarten Foundation, and find a cure for pancreatic cancer.

About the Author
Dana Romanello-Flynn is a teacher and lives in Greenwich, CT with her family. Her mother continues to amaze her with unyielding strength, courage, and resilience as she and many other survivors – and thrivers – change the face of pancreatic cancer.
Marianne Ganter is a watercolor artist from Freeport, Long Island, who currently resides in Bolton Landing, New York. She paints scenes of Lake George, as well as murals, portraits, and flowers. Homes and estates in the Lake George area are her favorite subjects.
