In today’s society, you can find a security officer or guard in places where they would not have been found ten, or even five years ago. It’s unfortunate that armed security officers are needed in many public schools today, but this is where we are as a society. If there continues to be a demand for armed school security officers in the future, and there will be, they should strive to not only be good ones, but the best they can be. They should be highly trained and equipped to do whatever is necessary to provide safety and security at the school where they work. Anything less than good is unacceptable. But the ultimate goal is to be their very best. I’ve had many jobs in my lifetime. In each one of them, even as far back as working in the fields as the son of sharecroppers in the deep south of Tennessee in the mid-sixties, I’ve always done my very best at every job, task, and responsibility I was given. I’ve carried this attitude and work ethic with me up to this very day. I don’t think I could perform any differently if I tried. It’s a good feeling knowing that I’ve done my very best, and never settled for just being average. I hope that after you have read this entire book, you’ll understand how to make the improvements necessary in your own work ethic.
Some have called me a perfectionist. I would say to them, “I’m not perfect. I just want to be good at what I’ve chosen to do.” I will never be the best at anything, but at least I can try to be my best at what I’ve chosen to do. As a school security officer, you owe your best to the people you serve. If this makes you uncomfortable, perhaps you should consider a different career. I write these things not to point out flaws or address someone else’s failures, because I too have flaws and have made many mistakes. Rather, I write this book to help you in your job as a school security officer. I’m sure that if you read this book with an open mind, you’ll agree that there’s at least one thing you would like to change about the way you operate as a school security officer. Working in school security is not a hard job. It can be very stressful at times, but you should not allow the stress to interfere with your job. You must still take your duties and responsibilities seriously and work at them diligently. While you’re on duty there will be plenty of slack time, but never down time.
Whether you’re a young school security officer just starting on the job, or a seasoned one who has been on the job for several years, this book can benefit you in carrying out your duties and responsibilities. It can help you become a good school security officer on your way to becoming a better one. This book is for all present and future school security officers.
