Chapter 1 Pizzazz!
It was a moonlit night. The waves were rushing up to shore. Sitting on the beach was a turtle -- a bigger than usual turtle. A faint sniffling sound could be heard.
While sitting there, the turtle noticed an unusual glow. It appeared to be circling her. Before she could say, “Oh, my!” the glow landed right on her nose! The glow was a firefly -- not your usual firefly -- but a firefly with a very unique glow.
After the firefly landed, he smiled and said, “Hi!”
The turtle said, “Hi!” back.
The firefly said, “My name is Flicker! I noticed you were sniffling. Why?”
“Because I am sad. I am so different than the other turtles.”
“How are you different?”
“See,” said the turtle as she stood up.
At first Flicker’s eyes grew big, but then he broke into a big grin and said, “I love them! I love your long legs and I love your polka dots!”
“You love my long legs and my polka dots?”
“Oh, my, yes!” said Flicker. “They give you Pizzazz!!!!”
“What is Pizzazz?”
“It’s that something different! It’s that something that makes you unique!” said Flicker.
“Really? My long legs and polka dots give me Pizzazz and make me unique?”
“Yes, they do!” said Flicker.
“What is your name?”
“I…don’t have one,” said the turtle sadly.
“Well, you do NOW! It’s Polka Dottie!”
Polka Dottie smiled really big! She had a new name and a friend! Life is Good :)

About the Book
Sometimes it’s hard being different or so, Polka Dottie, a long legged turtle, thought! I Love Being Me is the delightful tale of how Polka Dottie discovered, with the help of her new friends, Flicker and Hawk, to celebrate her uniqueness and embrace her Pizzazz!
Every one of us has this uniqueness—we have our own Pizzazz. Let’s celebrate these wonderful differences—just like Polka Dottie and her friends :)
About the Author

Kathy Elstad loves to use bits and pieces of her life in her writing. Polka Dottie came from playing Barbies with her granddaughters, Brooke and Lauren. When they played Barbies, Kathy always used a Barbie with a long, white dress and black polka dots. She named her Miss Polka Dottie. So when Kathy was creating a girl, long legged turtle, it was not surprising that Miss Polka Dottie popped into her mind. And so, Polka Dottie came to be! Writing is so much fun! Kathy treasures “Barbie time” with Lauren, Brooke and Miss Polka Dottie! Life is Good :)

Felicia Whaley is an illustration and design student at the Illinois Art Institute of Chicago. She is currently working on her bachelors degree. She resides in Oak Park, Illinois with her daughter, Harmonie.
