Prune was always happy, he was never down.
It was just his PUG smile that looked like a frown.
He always felt special, everyone loved Prune.
He didn’t know Baby Basil would be arriving soon.
When Basil arrived, Prune felt so sad.
He didn’t get all the attention that he once had.
He tried all his tricks and did his best to impress,
but with Basil around they seemed to care less.
He stole Basil’s Binky right out of her bed.
Prune was begging for attention, but got time out instead.
Poor Basil, she cried. But prune didn’t care.
Nobody had ever taught Prune how to share.
Basil said to Prune, “If you share with me,
we could be best friends and so happy we’ll be.”
So she gave him her Binky and made room in her bed,
and the two slept together head to head.
They shared all their food. It seemed Basil got less,
as prune followed closely to clean up the mess.
After sating their dinner and filling their bellies…
was it Basil or Prune that made the big smellies?
It was time for a bath. They shared bubbles and toys,
and they got ready for bed without making much noise.
A new day tomorrow, as today must end.
They will wake up and share it with their new best friend.

About the Book
For a long time, Prune the pug is the center of attention in the household. Everyone loves Prune, and life is good for this happy dog. But then baby Basil joins the family.
Prune feels a little sad, a little left out, and maybe a little jealous. He has never learned to share. He tries all kinds of things to get people to notice him, but he gets into trouble instead. Basil suggests they become friends, and soon they are sharing everything from snacks to binkies to bath time and more.
Through humorous rhymes, Basil & Prune the Pug tells a true story of friendship and sharing. Prompted by the hilarious relationship between her granddaughter Basil and Basil’s dog Prune, Vermont artist Kimalie Wassick has written and illustrated a colorful and cheery story about a pug who learns to adjust to life with a new baby in the house.
About the Author
Kimalie Wassick has been working as a professional artist since graduating from Endicott College in 1983 where she studied graphic design. She is well known for her colorful paintings, sculptures, murals, and whimsical interiors.
Kimalie has recently written and illustrated a series of Basil & Prune the Pug books, depicting the colorful lives of her granddaughter, Basil, and Basil’s pug, named Prune.
She resides in Vermont with her husband and their two dogs.
