Several sunrises came and went and the Lady Rancher would occasionally change out my hay for fresh and make sure there was food and water. I could feel myself getting stronger and growing. My yellow fuzz gave way to feathers that were tan with dark brown edges. My legs grew longer and I found I could hop out of my box. I was awkward on my feet at first and tripped myself up a few times, but I soon got the hang of it. When the Lady wasn’t around I would roam the big house and forage for small bugs that found their way inside. I spent less time under the heat lamp and basked in the sunny window shelf with Pepper. She would tell me stories of happy times growing up with the girl and of life outside the big house on the ranch.

About the Book
