“Mrs. Neodakis raised her misty blue eyes to behold her image in the mirror. ‘Why you’ve made me disappear!’ she cried to Henri, who stood observing his handiwork smugly. He had created a casque of golden curls that overtopped her little cranium and framed her face in a frenzied sea of agitated waves. Mrs. Neodakis felt she was small enough without this coif to diminish her so aggressively. She was tempted to shout out at him, ‘Hank, you stinking fairy. Stop looking so goddamned smug!’”

Sixteen-year-old Jocelyn Nye is quick, glib, and little. As a member of the incoming freshman class at a women’s college, Joss is domiciled on campus at Harmon House with a gaggle of other girls who have never been away from home before.
