Protected Teeth = Fewer Cavities Section II. Sealants
There are natural crevices or grooves on the biting surfaces of teeth. Dentists call them pits and fissures. I will refer to them as crevices.
Many of the cavities in the six to eighteen year-olds are in these crevices.
Fluoride does not prevent decay in these narrow crevices. Sealing the crevices is the best protection from decay in the crevices. Dentists call this procedure pit and fissure sealant.
These crevices are mainly on the biting services of the back teeth. They can also be on the back side of the upper front teeth near the gum line.
Look at the biting surfaces of the back teeth. You will see the crevices. It may be necessary to brush the biting surfaces and dry them before you can see them. They can be dried with a gauze or small towel.
When viewed under a microscope, these crevices are narrower than the width of a human hair. If a human hair is too wide to fit into the crevice, certainly a toothbrush bristle is way too wide to fit in. If it cannot fit in, it cannot clean it.
The crevices in the biting surfaces are too narrow to be cleaned with a toothbrush. The crevices are huge to bacteria however. It is a great place for bacteria to hide. It is easy for the bacteria to start decay in these crevices. This is why fluoride does not help reduce decay in the crevices.
This is why crevices need to be sealed to protect them.

CHAPTER 7 What Should I Be Doing for My Child Year by Year?
Section I. Before Pregnancy
1. The bacteria that cause decay and/or gum disease can be passed from one person to another. We want to pass healthy bacteria from the parents to the newborn.
Both parents need to have dental examinations well before the baby’s arrival.
Have the dentist remove any decay that is found. Have any gum disease treated.
Follow up with daily flossing and brushing. Your mouth will now develop healthy bacteria. These healthy bacteria will be passed to your newborn.
2. Growing a healthy child begins with breast-feeding for one year, more or less. Now is a good time to start talking about options to enable this. Arrange your lifestyle to enable mother to be primarily with her child and breast-feed. It is important for husband and wife to discuss any lifestyle changes.
3. It is important that a mother deliver blood oxygen within normal limits to the fetus. A sleep disorder can reduce the oxygen in the mother’s blood. A fetus receiving blood with lowered oxygen may not develop as well as a fetus receiving blood with normal blood oxygen.
Symptoms for the Expectant Mother to Be Concerned about
Difficulty going to sleep
Difficulty staying asleep
Snoring
Waking up gasping
Waking up not feeling refreshed
Waking up with a headache
Grinding teeth during sleep
Heart burn
(GERD)

CHAPTER 10
Posture
Good posture is an important part of growing a healthy child.
For generations mothers have rightly told their children to stand up tall and straight. They have told them to hold the head back, the shoulders back, the chest forward, and the stomach in. They have been right in ordering this. This posture can give a healthier back, neck, and generally improved health.
Seldom mentioned is that poor posture causes the rib cage to press inward against the liver. A person could list the adverse effects poor posture has each internal organ and on the various joints. The adverse effect of poor posture can be significant. Let’s just say that good posture is important for best health.
Good posture also improves air flow, brain activity, and a sense of wellbeing.
Good posture radiates a positive image to others.
Summary
Good posture is important, just as mothers have said for many years.
