No Mask, No Home!

Chapter 2 – Kale
And so….
The sun was bright and at its sorest
As Rupert Raccoon headed into the forest.
A limb was blocking his way in
As his eyes tracked where the limb had been.
He spied a funny looking longtailed creature
His bright green color was his special feature.
Rupert said, “Hi, little friend, sitting on the long limb.”
It turned towards Rupert and looked right at him.
“How can you see me? I’m blending in
The color of the branch is brown like my skin.”
Rupert said, “I’m sorry to disappoint you, my friend
But a reflective pool is what I’d recommend.
The color of your skin is fresh and pure
And a prettier green than green manure.”
“Green? Green? What do you mean?
I change with the background. I can’t be seen!
Now my color should be bright yellow
As I jump onto the sunflower, my good fellow,” said the creature.
“Well, it’s not, it’s still green as I told you before
It’s green like the grass on the Earth’s ground floor,” said Rupert.
“I’m Kale chameleon. That’s our gimmick that’s what we do
Our skin changes colors in various hues.
What about now as I jump to the clover?”
“You’re green as before. You’re green all over,” said Rupert.
“Oh good, you had me going for a minute, my friend
Here I was convinced my skin didn’t blend.
Why, you’re a jokester. You had me good
But my skin is now green just like it should,” said Kale.
Rupert started to speak and wanted to clarify
But Kale interrupted him every time he would try.
“So, my funny friend, what exactly are you?
An opossum? A skunk? No, that won’t do.
I know. You’re a squirrel? A mole? A big fat cat?
A fox? A wolf? A big gray rat?” said Kale.
“I’m not a squirrel, a mole or a small baboon
A fox or wolf I’m Rupert Raccoon.”
“Where’s your mask, my raccoon friend?
Put it back on is what I’d recommend,” said Kale.
“I was born this way no mask on my face
I’m hoping the wise owl might possibly hear my case.
From what I heard he’s very wise indeed
It’s really not a want. It’s more of a need!” said Rupert.
“Well, would you like someone to accompany you?
I’m a lot of fun and I blend in, too,” said Kale.
Rupert wanted to tell him his skin didn’t change
But they heard a noise that was very strange.
Both Rupert and Kale covered their ears
“I haven’t heard a noise like that in many years,” said Kale.
