We went into a small room to visit and she sat down on a bench while I ran around the room. It felt so good to be out of the cage! I was happy to meet this pretty lady who liked me even though I barked a lot. Stopping in front of her, I sat down and she took my front paws in her hands. I stood on my hind legs and looked up at her and gave her a big kiss.
Smiling and laughing, she told the man who worked at the shelter,
“This is the one! I will take him home!”
I wagged my tail and jumped up and down. At last I would be going home with someone! Next they gave me a new collar and a new leash to wear.
“Come Dugan! Let’s go home,” the lady said. She opened the back door to her big, white car. After I climbed in, she attached my leash to the seat belt so I would be safe. Being in the car was new to me and I was a little afraid. When she started to drive, I started to cry.
“It’s ok Dugan,” she said, “Don’t be afraid. Mom will take care of you.” That was how I found out her name was “MOM.”

She adopts him and gives him a loving home. His new mom also helps him find the special talent he has always wished for.

About the Author
Joanne Russo Insull holds a master’s degree in special education and a second master’s degree in exercise science. She has worked extensively with children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses as a teacher and trainer. After beginning a second career in wellness and fitness, she currently works with senior adults as an exercise instructor and certified personal trainer. She and her husband have two rescue dogs, Dugan and Pinot, and believe strongly in pet adoption.
