The phone rang, and Evie answered it in a crooning voice. She was surprised to hear it was Anne.
“I hope this isn’t too late notice, but I was hoping you and your sister, Louise, could come for lunch tomorrow.”
“I’m free,” said Evie, "Let me check with my sister and I will call you back.”
Going up to Louise’s room she said, “I need your help. Anne has asked us both for lunch tomorrow.. I can go, and it would mean a lot to me if you would come.”
“What does she want with me ?” Asked Louise. “What do I get for coming?” Questioned Louise.
“I’ll give you five dollars and no more,” stated Evie.
“It’s a deal,” said Louise.
On Sunday morning after Mass, the two girls drove to Anne’s house and Louise was impressed with the area and the exterior of Chet’s house. Anne greeted them at the Doors and brought them back to the sunroom just off the kitchen. Offering wine, Anne poured Evie a glass and Louise a ginger ale.
“I’m sure you are hungry. I made shrimp salad,” said Anne and brought in a platter of shrimp salad surrounded by avocados and tomato. “Before we eat, I want to give you a gift, Evie.” Reaching into her apron pocket, she pulled out a small box that would fit a ring or earrings.
Pulling the ribbon off, Evie snapped open the lid and found an emerald and diamond ring. “Oh, you shouldn’t have!’ Exclaimed Evie.
“I thought it only fitting that you have a ring for your engagement, and Chet doesn’t have have the money for a ring. We have brought a ticket home so he will not Have that expense.”
During the delicious meal, the three talked about the upcoming bridal shower and Evie was busy admiring her hand. The fit of the ring was perfect. All and all it Was a nice time, and the girls left with fond goodbyes.

About the Book
It is 1971 when twenty-three-year-old Evie first spots Chet in a laundromat in the town of Winthrop. She is a medical receptionist. He is charming, intelligent, and ready to begin a new career as an on-air radio personality in Boston. Their attraction is immediate.
The following night, Chet and Evie go on their first date. As romance quickly blooms, it soon becomes evident they are made for each other. When he is in town, Chet stays at a place he calls the House of the Good Times—and it certainly lives up to its name. After Evie decides he is the one, she dreams of a future with him that includes marriage, a family, and of course, a lifetime of happiness. Unfortunately her dreams are short-lived as Chet’s true character is eventually revealed. Now Evie must somehow find a way to attain her own dreams and fulfillment, without depending on Chet.
In this coming-of-age tale, a young woman who falls in love with a dashing radio broadcaster during the early seventies is ultimately led on a journey of self-discovery where she realizes the joy of independence.
