I was born on July 28, 1937, to Richard and Mary Ellen Blackwell. We were a family of five boys, and I was the middle child. My mother went to her parents’ home in Eastville, Virginia, to have me, with the help of a midwife. As soon as my mother could travel again, we went back home to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, where I lived for the first eighteen years of my life.
Bryn Mawr was known to be a wealthy, white suburb located on the Philadelphia Main Line, a group of wealthy communities built along the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which went from downtown Philadelphia and headed west.
