A dark, cold, and rainy night settles on the redwood forest floor to await the morning sun that will break through the forest morning mist. The soft chilling breeze wanders through the trees just enough to brush off the dewy rain that lies on the leaves. The stars shone bright twinkling in the black night sky.
Kyle and Frank’s sweat runs down their faces mixing with the drizzling rain as they struggle with the awkward weight of the lifeless body. The body is less than a struggle for Kyle with his six-foot plus frame than Frank.
“This is your idea of a place to dump the body?“ Frank says, in frustration.
“Not dump but place it in a place where it can be seen” Kyle responds in a short whisper.
“Place it where? On this gravel parking area, and then lets get out of here” Frank says in a loud whisper, and adds “We are going to get caught, that is what is going to happen”.
Kyle struggles with the wet rain soaked body while holding the mag light.
“I just want to get it on top of the granite marker; now, give me a hand before his clothes get soaked!” Kyle says, in an angry whisper, and “don’t let the body drag on the rocks and dirt, and keep your gloves on”.
Kyle goes behind the marker to get a footing, placing the body on the ledge of the eight-foot marker. Frank positions the body so that Kyle can lift it to the edge of the marker ledge and pushes the body up to Kyle. Kyle hoists the body up to the ledge of the Marker and looks out to the west of the Marker and can see Derrick’s greenhouse in the far distance with the fire raging and can almost hear the glass roof and sides crashing on the floor.
“See I told you we could do two jobs in one night. ‘Dirty deeds done cheap’ Kyle says with an evil chuckle – “we earned ourselves some pretty coin tonight to spend”, Kyle says patting himself on the back and continues “…I got just the evidence to point the finger at Derrick for the death of this guy”.
He takes out a flower from his shirt pocket and places it inside the jacket pocket of the body. Kyle jumps down and high fives Frank with a big grin. As they leave, they kick at the gravel rocks in the parking lot trying to get rid of any tracks they may have left behind, and Kyle takes a walk backwards to their 4x4 to look that everything has been set right
”Ok I think the rain will erase any tracks – think we are ok to go” Kyle says.
Frank exclaims “lets get out of here this place is giving me the creeps and doing two jobs is just pushing our luck too far, damn you!”
They speed off to the sounds of popping granite stones under the weight of the tires and are swallowed up by the darkness and the little rain that seemed fitting for the nights work.
Kyle is anxious as Frank drives away in the pickup from the Park’s side Entrance.
“Let’s swing by Ron’s casino, I need a drink”, Kyle exclaimed to Frank as they speed on the highway away from the Marker.
“Now you are talking” Frank responds cheerfully and continues, “the casino is opened past midnight, maybe if Ron is there we can get paid”.
“You know Ron does not do any business in the casino”, Kyle responds and adds, “we did the job and Ron has never stiffed us. Just be patient he will want to wait and make sure we did it right and there are no problems. Now put that tarp over the marijuana plants in the truck bed and take special care of the one with PURPLE leaves and I’ll look for a parking spot away from everything”.
Kyle and Frank had quite the haul for a night’s works.
The Casino is on the main highway and is a quick 20-minute drive from the Marker. Ron, the Casino owner, meets Kyle and Frank at the front entrance of the Casino in a turned down collar suit and says before they could tell Ron about the haul they hear
Ron say “Maybe you boys should go clean up before you come into the Casino”. Ron continues, “maybe you should come back tomorrow. Watch out for the Sheriff Lee and his sidekick deputy Donnie. It’s raining just enough to make the highway wet and slippery so they will probably be out”.
Kyle and Frank look at themselves and decide not to make a fuss and head off to go to Kyle’s moms store, Shara’s Flower Shop, which is a 30-minute drive north up the highway.
“Well that’s a bummer, guess we are uninvited”. As they walk back to the car, Frank says to Kyle angry at not getting into the casino to check out the girls.
Kyle quickly responds, “It is just as well with all we have done tonight I would be too nervous to gamble and I don’t think I could think straight anyway.”
Frank responds, “I guess you are right, maybe we should stop by and see Sally.” Frank suggests.
“She is spending the night with Kiki – girl stuff you know; how is Joe doing”? Kyle asks,
“Think my old man is running a load of logs again” Frank responds and adds, “ he is still after me to join up at the Mill, lets head over to your place, that way maybe we can run over to Ron’s tomorrow morning”.
