Watercress

Watercress was almost sure that he heard the cry, or something that definitely sounded like one. He wanted to be sure, so he waited to hear it again. And again, he was sure that he did hear something. It sounded like someone was crying, “Help me!”  The cry sounded like it was coming from the inside of the Enchanted Forest. Watercress didn’t know what to do. His momma had always said, “Don’t you dare go into the Enchanted Forest. Not ever! And don’t you even think about it young man. Do you hear me? You can get lost in there, or even worse, you can be eaten up by a big ferocious animal.” But before he could even finish thoughts of his mother’s warnings, he heard the cry again. He lifted his ear and listened. Without thinking, he edged closer to the forest, then closer and then even closer. Watercress was so worried about listening for the cry, that he didn’t even realize that he had been slowly creeping into the forest.
