You’re a fool, Dina! She stood now near the pool, her body trembling, longing to feel the explosion of suddenly diving into this water, releasing herself. Your beauty can’t buy him back! She recalled past loves that she could manipulate to her own needs, the masculine attention less attractive girls had to work harder for. Why hadn’t Frank fit this puzzle? Why had her own perspicacity for the opposite sex failed her?
Suddenly from the pit of the pool, a whorl of water swirling counter-clockwise and gaining speed along with a sucking noise, exploded into the night. Dina staggered back and fell back into the lawn chair, her eyes never straying from the gushing whirlpool before her. This was no malfunctioning pool filter! How could the water do this without a great deal of wind?
The suction was a terrifying sound, coupled now with a long, low “Om-m-m-m-m!” like the raspy rattle of a bucket bottom scraping along a sidewalk. Each note, every few seconds grew a little louder. The pool water meanwhile, continued raging, gradually rising, perfectly formed, as if its “torso” were a vase made of glass, sunk into the swimming pool.
“What in heaven…?” Dina breathed quietly, too tense to move now.

Dina Kinnit, 29, lives a dream life and has always relied on her beauty to get her where and who she wants. So when she is at a loss to figure out why Frank, her lover and coworker abandons her, she goes to extremes to recapture his affection but unknowingly unleashes a monstrous hell into the population. Now she needs the help of an ancient East Indian woman to show her how to cope with all the evils besetting not only her own life, but the lives of her fellow employees as well.
Set in 1991, Chicago without the universal advantage in convenience of cell phones and computers, Dina sets out on a wild, far-fetched mission fueled by jealousy and fear, but anchored mostly in the hope of recovery.
About the Author
Therese England is a graduate of Illinois State University with a bachelors degree in English. She has also undertaken classes in writing for publication at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. A fan of all things spooky and paranormal, she lives in Northbrook, Illinois with her three black cats. This is her first novel.
