Hello, my name is Mr. Wise Owl, and what's your name? It's wonderful to meet you! Let me ask you a question – do you like birthday parties? From the games to the balloons, from the delicious cake to singing 'happy birthday' – I've always found everything about them absolutely exceptional! But not everyone feels that way.
I remember once when I was just a little owlet, a friend invited me to his birthday party. We were all having a grand time, playing and dancing. All of us, except for one young owlet. He was standing in a corner, covering his ears with his wings.
Curious to know why, I went closer. "It's all a bit too much for my sweet boy," explained his mother. I, even as a small owlet, wanted to help him, but I didn't know how.
It wasn't until years later – when I became a teacher – that I chanced to meet a remarkable young hedgehog. Soon I began to understand how I could help. Would you like to listen to his story? Let us begin. Here's Hugo.
Hi! I'm Hugo! How are you? Do you sometimes feel like things get to be a bit 'too much'? I certainly do! I'm a sweet hedgehog, but when I'm in a room full of people, or I hear loud noises, I curl up into a ball. This wouldn't be a problem if I were all furry and fluffy. But if you look at me closely – you will realize that I'm covered in pointy spikes.

About the Book
Hugo is a sweet little hedgehog, but sometimes things get to be too much for him. When there are lots of loud noises and people, Hugo curls up into a spiky ball, unintentionally stinging his classmates. He feels sad and very sorry, especially when his friends nickname him, Prickly Hugo, and refuse to play with him. What he doesn’t realize is that his kindly, teacher, Mr. Owl, knows just how to help. Included at the end of the story, are questions. These are meant to inspire dialog with children who are learning to cope when things get to be ‘too much’.
Peaceful Hugo is the touching tale of a sweet hedgehog and his journey to finding the calm within a loud classroom, and most of all, loving himself just the way he is.
About the Author
Jennifer Davis was educated at Georgetown University Medical Center and has worked at several renowned medical institutions, including the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Davis started writing children’s books in 2017. It became clear to Dr. Davis that children do not have the emotional vocabulary of an adult. With this understanding, Dr. Davis creates stories that encourage children to describe their feelings and create dialog. Dr. Davis has several other books in the works covering various aspects of mental wellbeing in childhood.
