The meeting took place on a bench in a park, where people walked with their dogs and children played nearby. The gentleman came to the meeting carrying a bag of fudge and offered her a piece as he sat down.
“By way of introduction, I am the man who spoke with your father’s lawyer. I have been looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you better.”
Angela took a piece of fudge but remained quiet.
“Some of the things I will ask you may seem personal. Please know it is not my intention to make you feel uncomfortable. But let me assure you what we are about to discuss is very important. If you do not realize that now, someday you will. Is it all right if I begin?”
Angela shrugged. “I suppose.”
“Are you seeing anyone on a steady basis?”
He could tell she was taken aback by the question.
In a very calm voice, he said, “I apologize for startling you, but we cannot continue until I have an answer to this question.”
“I recently met a young man,” she replied, “and we have been out a couple of times.”
“What is his name and what work does he do?” the man asked.
“His name is Artyom, and he does some type of diplomatic work.”
“Do you see a chance you could become serious with this young man?”
Angela glared at the man and snapped, “I resent you asking me something like that.” She got up to leave.
He gently took her arm. “Please stay. Here, have another piece of fudge.” Then, almost whispering, he said, “Remember the position your father is in.”
The subtle threat made in such a casual manner caused her to sit back down.
