Undercover Lover
Helen Reddy knew the score.
Yes, I am woman. Now hear me roar.
Do you think I could look you right in the eyes, open my mouth,
and tell you lies?
Well, if I can, I’ve learned from the best.
Lying men. Each one better at it than the rest.
That’s the way you operate. So good at it you believe your own lies.
I’ve learned the technique, and that I simply can’t deny.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, I guess.
Beat you at your own game. So, you know what comes next.
You may stop for a while, Mr. Undercover Lover.
Lying to me and your undercover lover.
You’ll have the nerve to ask me to forgive and forget.
I can pretend to forgive, but I will never forget.
Forgiveness is a virtue
Forgetting is a risk.
If I forget, history may indeed repeat itself.
If I forget, I show a lack of self-respect.
You think I’m willing to give you the upper hand.
You poor, dumb, stupid, little man.
If I did, you’d become rich and I’d become poor.
That situation will be no more.
So, be faithful to me and stop the mini vacation.
Otherwise, your undercover station will end up being a permanent situation.

About the Author
Montrelle Jackson-Sinegar, Ph.D. is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her doctoral degree in counselor education in 2001. A retired middle school principal and counselor, she has always wanted to share her thoughts through poetry and has now achieved that goal. In addition to writing, her primary focus is her family.
