Kiki had seen many humans. It was confusing to her because none were ever mean or dangerous acting. Kiki was young and hadn't seen many things in her life yet. Kiki knew one thing very well. If her family and friends said to stay away, it was because they loved her and wanted her to be safe. So, staying away was the rule.
The problem was even though she and others tried to stay from humans, the humans and their noisy things seemed to be getting closer with every passing day.
Some humans seemed not to sleep like the animals in the forest. Their "loud things" get louder and louder. Kiki thought “humans are everywhere”. On the water in noisy boats. On land in cars and those loud two-wheeled things. Kiki knew that the large flying things were full of people too. Her Grandmother had taken her on a very long walk once to show her humans at the Marathon Airport. The two Key deer watched from the edge of the forest as the humans went into the giant flying birds that they call airplanes.
As Kiki made her way through the welcoming cool shade of the forest, she pondered her biggest problem, the big black dog, Slugger, who lived across the forest in a bright yellow house.
He was always barking at her whenever they met. He had never even tried to bite her, but his deep bark alone was frightening enough to make her run from him and hide, trembling with fear in the forest.
Two miles away, Slugger sat in the shade of his human family's yellow house. Slugger was a two-year-old male black lab. Everyone in the world of the humans seemed to love Slugger. He was a loving 90-pound playful dog who was hard not to like.
What people did not know was that Slugger was not like other dogs. Slugger had a gift.

Robert Andrew Provan was inspired by the legendary Jacques Cousteau, finding adventure in New England’s mountain streams and lakes, emulating his hero’s deep-sea explorations. His passion for the ocean guided him through a stint in the US Navy and has anchored him to the Florida coast, where the sea’s siren song remains his constant inspiration. Today, he combines his love for the ocean with storytelling, captivating young minds with the wonders beneath the waves.
