Becky pulled open the screen door and walked inside past her sister. Her eyes darted around the small alcove just inside the doorway and past it to a small room on the right, furnished with a well-worn sofa and a matching pair of armchairs. A small, round table stood at either end of the sofa, each holding a lamp and a few pieces of bric-a-brac, and a low, wooden coffee table sat in front of it. Becky knew that a small TV set sat out of sight of the doorway on a metal stand on the opposite wall, and an oval braided rug covered the middle half of the oak floor. The sight and familiar smell of the house hit her like a blow to the midsection.
“It looks just like I remember,” she said softly.
“What did you expect?” Her sister pushed the front door shut behind her, threw the lock, and switched off the porch light. “Did you think I was going to redecorate?”
“Clara, I …”
“What are you doing here, Becky?”
Becky set her suitcase down. Her hand went to her forehead, and her lean fingers massaged the space between her brows. “Would you believe me if I said I don’t honestly know?”

Eliza Grace Howard is a fifth-generation native of the rural Piedmont region in North Carolina. While growing up on a small tobacco farm, she experienced the unique culture of the area and gained a deep understanding of its people, both the good and the challenging. Glitter is her second book.
