You see, this side of war is hardly ever spoken of, it stays a mystery; you’ll never get a sexy film bite from the media, because reporters are never seen at this level unless there’s a photo op being staged for political points. Our missions didn’t call in air assets—there were no Predator drones to reach out and touch someone from 25,000 feet above the target-rich environment. This warfare was up close and always personal. If something did kick off, you’d most likely be invited into a meeting with a smile for a mafia-style sit-down. The door would be shut as soon as you entered a 12 x 12 room where everyone was carrying, one round chambered, safety off. Either deals were made or you’d better have brushed up on your CQB or MOUT training to get precise with your actions in confined spaces. The savagery of extreme violence with a calm head could be your only option and saving grace if you wanted to walk away alive. Those other service members who were also assigned to (and accepted) the same missions I agreed to as part of the Global War on Terrorism, who pushed the boundaries of the sandbox we played in, have mostly been shot, blown up, or otherwise killed trying to reveal the dirty underside of corruption associated with war. In Patika Province in Afghanistan they blew up one of my counterparts for digging too deep and asking too many questions about operational funding in country. In Khost, US military personnel in possession of multiple trash bags filled with cash—money destined to pay Afghan locals directly for their hard work, instead of contractors who paid tribute to the Taliban—were the targets of an IED. A motorcyclist traveling in front of their convoy became the unintended victim and was killed.

Ralston has been assigned to a Special Operations Unit and given the mission of investigating and collecting intelligence information on corruption, especially around the government center of Poytaxt City—a chaotic capital where terrorist groups and political extremists want nothing more than a toehold on the control of the country and keep the same communistbased government. When necessary, Ralston and his team must inhibit any future subversion of the old guard centralized government as coalition forces back the newly elected and popular prime minister, all while keeping his team from being killed. After the team completes all the pre-deployment requirements, they depart Louisiana for Troygekistan in Central Asia. Just days earlier, terrorists attacked the Poytaxt City International Airport. Clearly, they are embarking on a mission in an extremely dangerous location. Will Ralston and his team manage to stabilize a nation held hostage by corruption? The inspiration for this novel comes from elements of true events, an American special operations advisor and his team must fight against an established old guard government system of officials to stop misconduct, malfeasance and collaboration with terrorist organizations while on a complex mission to help stabilize a nation and stop foreign intervention.
About the Author
Joseph C. Miller III US Army (Retired) served in units such as Special Operation Detachment—Global (USSOCOM) , Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force - Afghanistan and the Commando Special Operations Advisory Group - A. A veteran of the war in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as a Special Operations Forces - Advisor to the Afghan Commandos and ANASOC. During his deployment, He was awarded the Afghan Commando Certificate and Patch with Commando Tab. He is a graduate of the New England Institute of Technology and Roger Williams University, and studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design through their executive education program.
