The being wears a white lace-hem sundress; he has long cinnamon hair pulled into a low ponytail and a lengthy beard that looks like a consistency of wood broom bristles. His cheekbones are highlighted with heavy amounts of dark pink blush, eyes bruised and glued together with pastel blue eyeshadow and a failed attempt at placing false eyelashes on his lash lines. The man spills blood from his mouth, covering his lips like dark red lipstick. The crimson drips down his throat, soaking the once-beautiful hem on the sundress. The nameless being hasn’t crossed the threshold, he’s staring at me, contorting his upper body to view me from the lower angle. His body droops down, dragging against the front door until his head barely misses the floor; his eyes grip my sockets, never letting go of the intense contest. I can see his eyes begin to tear up from the wind hitting his blank expression, even from a floor above him. Silence is the only thing that separates us, I hold my breath in my hands with the fear of letting it go, fear that something will snap in him as I exhale. The crickets are silent, knowing that a single chirp will set off a bomb that the universe has been good at concealing. “GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!” A sudden shatter of silence. The place I would’ve called my sanctuary booming from an earthquake that is his voice. “GET OUT, NOW! GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT!” His body twitcheds with his screamed words. I try to conceal the anxiousness that spreads through my body but my breath catches up to me, beating my heart in a race that I didn’t know I was running. A tear finds its way out of my duct, crawling down my face, extending in front of my eyes; like sticky gelatin, it stretches to a child-like mouth. “Run.” An elongated whisper from a seductive woman creeping up my spine, chilling the smallest of goosebumps. Within the instant the whisper was said, the tear glues back to my face and finishes dripping down my cheek.

For each one that tells her she holds a power that the Almighty craves, another says to believe nothing you hear. Rose travels through this realm but can she escape a labyrinth that asks, are you being attacked, or is it all in your head?
About the Author
Katherine Cava is from the San Francisco Bay Area in California. She currently studies at Penn State World Campus where she majors in Criminal Justice. Katherine has always found the dark and mysterious interesting, which is where she found inspiration for majority of her writing. Katherine is continually growing her Tik Tok account under the username “katherine_writing”. This is Katherine’s second published book, and her first novel.
