Spring had returned to the Yukon. The early April sun melted the snow from the roof of Steward’s cabin. The constant dripping of water from the eaves was a reassuring sign of warmer weather to come. After a long cold winter, life would return to this wilderness; the sunlight and warmth will start an explosion of growth in the forest. Over the course of only a few short weeks, the landscape will turn from brown to green as nature takes its course. Babies, born in the spring to mothers who live here, were in abundance at this time of the year, which is how Steward acquired Rudy. Rudy was a wolf pup Steward had found in his den crying, abandoned by his mother. Rudy was the runt of the litter, whose mother thought would be more trouble than he was worth. When the pack moved on to a different location, the wolves abandoned Rudy in the den. Steward scooped him up sensing the young wolf pup had no fear, only wanting security as he nestled into Steward’s arms. He took Rudy home and decided to nurse him back to health before introducing him to his sled dogs. He hoped an allowance would be made in heaven for Rudy, and his huskies, who viewed all wolves as their mortal enemy, would accept this pup. Steward had many dogs, but none were pets. Rudy would be the exception, kept in Steward’s cabin. He would become Steward’s most trusted dog, an alpha male who would eventually dominate the smaller huskies. He would be trained to be the lead sled dog, when Steward felt his time was ready. But for now, Rudy had to regain his strength and grow.

The Call of the Yukon is comprised of two stories, both set in the late 1800’s in the wilderness of Canada’s far north. About the Author
Born in Peterborough, Ontario, the youngest of eight children, William Stanley took up writing after retiring in 2017. Married for over forty years, he is the father of two and enjoys spending time with his two grandsons. William also enjoys gardening and hiking near his home in Peterborough.
