Fareed entered the expansive home that was dimly lit by oil lamps and was greeted by his cousin. He undid the traditional head scarf or keffiyeh his people. “So Daoud why the urgency? What’s this all about?” After kissing him on both cheeks, Daoud Abdul-Ghafur motioned Fareed to the sitting area. There were three other men already seated with their backs to them, dimly lit by candlelight since there was no electricity. When they approached, all of them stood up and turned to greet Fareed. Fareed’s eyes adjusted to the light and gasped. “President Grant.” President Connor Grant extended a handshake to the new arrival at their little meeting, something no American president had ever done. It was funny what a handshake could do. No other American president had ever shaken the hand of the leader of Hezbollah. They were branded as a terrorist organization by this very man’s government. But a handshake at times could still stand for something, and in this case, its significance could not be overstated. Abul-Ahad was dumbfounded and starstruck at the same time. “Mr. Abdul-Ahad, thank you for coming out at this early hour. It’s good that you speak English, since I speak no Arabic. I requested this meeting, because I have a proposition for you and your people. I have a proposition of hope. One that I believe if successful, will right, a lot of wrongs that have occurred in this region for over 70 years.” Abdul-Ahad slowly recovered, “Mr. President, I have to say, this is a most unexpected surprise. You have my attention.” Grant motioned to Abdul-Ahad to sit down. “I’m sure Mr. Abdul-Ahad, you can appreciate the risk I’m taking by being here. Actually, all of us in this room are exposing ourselves to a huge risk. Risk is sometimes necessary. I think the time has come for this region to take a risk. What has been the United States policy in the past, is about to change. I hear from King Najeeb here that you can be pragmatic. I hope that’s the case. Let’s talk about UN Resolution 181. Only risk and all parties being pragmatic will win the day and a new order in this part of the world.”
