I thought about what they call the butterfly effect. I wasn't sure that if a butterfly beat its wings on one side of the earth a wave rose on the other. But I damn sure understood cause and effect. If a tiny error in aiming a rifle or the failure to take into account the direction of the wind could throw a speeding bullet off course and miss its target, falling deeply in love with such a damaged woman was undoubtedly going to alter the direction of my life. Hell, it wasn't like I had a target to hit in the first place. I had no grand plan except to get through each day with as little grief as possible. Maybe I needed a change in trajectory. Whether I did or not was now immaterial. I was on a new course, and it was with this beautiful woman, and I felt emotions I thought were long dead. I was excited and terrified all at once and I know I was as helpless as an infant to do one damn thing about it.

This was the first chance I had to examine her up close, and I could see that she had makeup on different parts of her body. I’d been working the joint long enough to know the makeup probably hid bruises, burns, or cuts, inflicted by the men who came in and out of her life, whiskey scars I think they called them. I also saw a thin scar running through the eyebrow over her left eye, a souvenir from the past to remind her always of her place in life. I had plenty scars myself, some visible, and some not. I had read somewhere that scars were proof you had lived. I hated bullshit like that. Scars only proved you had been hurt and hurt permanently.
