Once in position, Kevin started to feel the cold creep through his snowsuit. He lay prone in the snow and propped his rifle on the bare branch of a stout bushy plant. The sky was cloudy and black, and he couldn't see more than a dozen yards without his scope. Even with the infrared, there was no contrast to bring additional detail to the landscape. Everything was the same colorless temperature, except when he rotated to focus on Joseph, who showed up as a slightly warmer blob resting against a tree on the east side of the road.
At least the cold kept him awake. He felt sorry for Joseph, who didn't seem to have completely recovered from the previous night's activities. He wished they didn't have radio silence so he could at least joke around with his friend while they waited in the icy darkness.
Once they finished their shift, thawing out in the heated shelter should raise their spirits. Until then, this should be a simple job for both of them. The real action was undoubtedly with Hanford and the others approaching the Lamarck station. Kevin found himself wishing that Alpha team would encounter resistance from the Konkies and radio back for help. Or maybe they would just gather intel and sneak back to make a plan of attack that included Delta and the rest of Ellison's men. They could be on their way back right now. Kevin really hoped that Joseph didn't shoot one of them.
His mind was wandering with all of these thoughts when a flash of contrast appeared in his scope. He had been pivoting his rifle from Joseph's position on his right back to the road, sweeping his view across the wooded hillside. There must have been some slight temperature variation in the vegetation. He scanned back over the area trying to rediscover it, and had almost given up, thinking it might have been a glitch in the infrared sight, when finally it appeared in his scope once more.
It was indistinct in form, but definitely a brighter shade of green than its surroundings. As Kevin zeroed in on the unknown object, it began to move, a hunched over form slowly approaching Joseph's position. It could have been a returning member of Alpha, but it was intentionally stealthy in its movements, and seemed to be alone. He turned his scope back to see that Joseph was focused on the road and oblivious to the nearing figure.
Kevin's adrenaline rushed as he thought through his options. He couldn't radio Joseph, and if he shouted to his friend, he might frighten the unknown figure away, losing the chance to discover what it was. Then he thought of the laser sight on his rifle. Maybe he could alert Joseph with directed flashes that would be more discreet.
It was getting close to Joseph now. Kevin reached for the switch on his laser sight as he zeroed his scope on a small mound near his friend. Joseph jerked back as a green dot illuminated the snow in front of him. The figure noticed Joseph's sudden movement and bounded towards him with amazing speed. Joseph rolled back and tried to lift his rifle, but instead slid in the snow and awkwardly tumbled against a tree. Before he could reorient himself, the figure rose up and leapt an inhuman distance through the air. As it landed on Joseph, Kevin fired.

About the Book
How do you conquer a planet?
Take away the sun.
(It’s easier than you think…)
NASA research satellites suddenly go silent as a mysterious dark “spot” appears in front of the sun. A young Kevin Mycroft discovers that the spot is steadily growing in size, threatening to throw the entire earth into permanent darkness. When senior NASA scientists, including Kevin’s father, begin intentionally hiding the truth, Kevin convinces his friends to take action on their own. But is there anything they can do to fight the grim fate that awaits the planet?
The origin of the eclipse soon reveals that cold and darkness are not the only enemies lurking in the shadows. And as each fight for survival seems to backfire, Kevin’s hopes fade while he questions whether he, or anyone else, can be the hero that the world so desperately needs.
About the Author
Since 2008, Matthew Huddleston has taught and mentored students as a physics professor at Trevecca University in Nashville, Tennessee, while continuing to do research in magnetospheric space physics. The topics of his classroom lectures often become inspirations for stories, and he believes that the science of the real world contains more wonder and mystery than anything he could invent as an author.
