“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dahlya Dragonfly!
Are you ready for a MYSTERY surprise?
First we’ll play our favorite game.
I’ll describe a creature and you try to guess its name.”
Just at that moment, Booker spotted a fly.
It was whizzing near Grandmop’s fresh juneberry pie.
Booker could chase a fly AND give creature clues too.
For Dahlya’s birthday, he had found extra-long words to use.
“DOL-I-CHO-CE-PHAL-IC is the first clue.
The fly suddenly landed on Booker’s back.
With that, he was even more DE-TER-MINED to make a trap.
In the bear den, Dahlya hoisted up her pen.
She made a list of clues and called it, “The Top Ten!”
Suddenly Dahlya had a SPLEN-DID notion
that sent her into a WHIRL of excited, swirling motion.
“Booker, I have a GRAND idea!
Let’s go to where your mysterious creature lives!”
Booker put on his Jet-Away jacket and cap.
He put on his backpack, his arms through the straps.
They squeezed their eyes shut, spread arms and wings wide,
and together they shouted: To Surprise! To Surprise! To Surprise!
Dahlya was sooooooooo thrilled she couldn’t be still. She squealed . . . .
Booker whispered in her ear, “Your buzzing around has frozen them with fear.
If you’re quiet and still, they might hop over here.”
Sure enough, as Dahlya sat unmoving on Booker’s shoulder,
first one, then two, then three . . . hopped over.
“I’m Booker T. Bear and this is Dahlya Dragonfly.
Today is her birthday and your mob is her SURPRISE!”

About the Book
Booker T. Bear of Juneberry Square has planned some big surprises for Dahlya Dragonfly’s birthday. The two best friends begin by playing her favorite guessing game: Creature Features. Booker’s clues keep her, Grandmop, and Grandpop stumped, and Dahlya is impressed and thrilled with each of Booker’s exciting hints.
She sketches each clue on paper, wondering what real life creature has three legs and a “powerful behind.” Using Booker’s top ten clues, Dahlya completes her drawing and smugly gives him her best guess. To her chagrin, Booker says her guess is incorrect, and Dahlya has a splendid notion: “Let’s go to where your mysterious creature lives!”
With that grand idea, Booker puts on his Jet-Away jacket and shouts out the magic verse that transports the two friends across the globe. To what surprise destination is Booker taking Dahlya for her birthday? What mysterious creature with such strange features will they find? Dahlya’s birthday proves to hold more thrills than either adventurer imagined!

A silly southern mom, Jen Jellyfish, M.M., ‘Magination Maker, has been
writing whimsical rhymes, stories, and songs since her childhood. She
loves her work as an author, writer, and book editor.
Jen and her husband have a Marine veteran son, a creative daughter,
and pets: dogs, cats, aquatic frogs, and fish. They live in the Midwest,
surrounded by fields of corn, pumpkins, soybeans, and . . . dragonflies!
Jen is consumed with the joy of reading, writing, rhyming, and playing with graphic design. She
especially enjoyed creating the colorful template of Dahlya Dragonfly for the illustrators’ print design.
Like Dahlya, Jen LOVES words; her favorite game is Scrabble. She also loves film, theater, creative cooking, and travel adventures. She has a deep appreciation and respect for all-things-creative and for nature.

About the Illustrators, Kurt Keller and Traci Van Wagoner . . .
Born and raised in NYC Kurt Keller was always surrounded by art and design. He found his passion young in
elementary school art class, honed his skills in high school, and finally graduated college with a degree in Industrial Design and a degree in Toy Design giving him the
ability to let his creative
passions soar.
Traci Van Wagoner came from a small town in Utah where her parents’ artistic passions started a spark. This spark grew and took her to get a degree in advertising at Utah State
University after which she felt the pull of NYC. She has a
passion for children’s books and has had the opportunity and pleasure to illustrate many of them. See more of her work at

After arriving in New York, Kurt and Traci met in Toy Design School at FIT where their creative passions formed not only a
