THE LOUP GAROU I’d been in plenty of swamps in south Louisiana but none of them had the smell of the Honey Island Swamp. It was the usual combination of decaying vegetation and sluggish water that gave it its base, but there was another smell I could never identify that made it so distinct, at least to me. It was really more of a feeling than an odor—and to me it felt, and smelled, like fear.
