When I got home, I went to my room and locked the door … I laid the Antoinette doll on my desk on a sheet of newspaper and enjoyed the calm before the storm.
First, I put on my latex gloves and carefully took some poison ivy I’d collected out of a plastic bag. I rubbed it all over the doll’s body, paying particular attention to the private areas. I put the sappy leaves back into the baggie and threw them in my wastebasket with the gloves. Then I fetched the Nair from my shower and carefully squeezed a dollop onto the head of the doll, massaging it in with a pencil. It wasn’t long before the doll’s hair came off the head in satisfying clumps.
I grew bolder but remembered the cautionary words of Ms. Marie to not get carried away … I spied the mousetrap I had set up in the corner to catch the field mouse that had decided to make my bedroom wall its home. I picked the trap up carefully and set it on my desk, positioning one leg of the doll on the trap. The heavy spring did its job, and the metal bar struck the doll’s leg with a loud, ominous, and somehow satisfying thwack. I thought that perhaps that was enough for one night, and I extricated the doll from the trap, wrapped it in newspaper, and shoved it into my desk drawer. I drifted peacefully off to sleep, dreaming of the prom.
