Starfish Sue asks Joy, "Will you be in the parade?" Joy did not look joyful. "I guess so," Joy replied with a touch of sadness. "But my sail is tattered from the recent storm, and my hulls need to be painted. Who wants to see a boat that is not fixed up?" Starfish Sue and Pelican Hugh looked at each other. Happy the sailboat sings happily about the upcoming boat parade at the Seashell Safe Harbor. Starfish Sue shares the good news with Pelican Hugh, Joy the catamaran, Mighty the shrimp boat, Sassy the speedboat, and the rest of the harbor boats. Not all the boats are excited about the parade, though, because they are not feeling their finest. “Who wants to see my tattered sail?” says Joy. “Who wants to see a dirty and smelly boat?” asks Mighty. Sassy feels she had a great chance of winning and tries to convince Joy and Mighty to participate, knowing the boats are not in their best shape. With concern for their boat friends feeling pressured to join in the parade, Starfish Sue, Pelican Hugh, and Dolphin Rue find Happy—and before you know it, Happy’s Captain Drew and the sailors had a plan. Sherrie Schmidt, the author of The Seashell Safe Harbor: Be Happy, wanted to create a book collection that would include her love of the coastal life, use characters that would be fun, and, most importantly, share a positive message. She chose to focus on the influence of peer pressure in The Seashell Safe Harbor: Pier Pressure. The story encourages you to stay true to who you are, believe in yourself, and appreciate your friends who see your value.
